Basketball Easy Offense
PLEASE help me with some easy basketball fundamental terms/situations!?
So I've always liked other sports more than Basketball but I really want to learn some of the finer points in the game, especially on D.
1. explain the trap defense. What is it and what does it help to stop?
2. Elaborate on the zone defense. How many different zones are there and if you can, explain each one.
- for example, explain the 3-2 zone D.
3. the press is pretty much man-to-man, either half or full-court.. correct?
4. what do people mean by the half-court style of offense? Is that basically a guard-oriented, pass-heavy style of play?
These are great questions to ask because they're all things that influence the game.
1. Trap defense works to eliminate a players movement and passing ability. Example; if an offensive player has control of the ball and has stopped dribbling then the defensive players surround him and try and eliminate any passes. The trap defense is executed generally with the full court press (when a team plays defense the whole length of the floor). Traps generally happen along an out-of-bounds line so the offensive player has less options on where to go. Traps don't have to only be after the offensive player has stopped dribbling. If a player receives a pass the defense should adjust and work to trap him before he can dribble. In this case the offensive player might try to dribble through the trap, this generally leads to an offensive foul and the defensive team taking possession.
2. Zone defense is when a player is assigned to an area of the court rather than a player. The defense rotates to stop the ball and players move to defend against cuts in the offensive set. Typical zone defenses are the 1-3-1, the 2-3, the 3-2, and rarely the 2-1-2.
The 1-3-1 has a single player at the top of the set looking to control the point guard and will generally play him man-to-man until he passes the ball away. The down 4 players are alligned 3-1 with the top 3 players playing at the three point line extended and lower and are placed to stop passes. They are placed with a middle and 2 wings that extend out to the 3-point line. The bottom 1 player controls around the basket and stops players along the baseline or any player that drives to the hoop. This style of zone is more effective with younger players and his harder to implement against more experienced teams/players.
The 2-3 zone has 2 players that combine efforts to stop the point guard and guards on the wings (close to the 3-point line but are there to spread the defense). The bottom 3 are placed on the 2 blocks and one in the middle of the lane. The 2 players on the blocks will work out to the 3-point line but are placed to stop bigger opponents from posting-up. This zone defense will generally focus on stopping passes into the post by double-teaming him with a player placed in front (fronting) and a player that plays behind him. This zone is used in junior high, high school, and some college programs.
The 3-2 zone works to stop a team with good outside shooting. It works like the 1-3-1, but the bottom two players rarely help with guarding outside or 3-point shooters and work on getting rebounds and stopping any drives to the basket. This is a better zone defense for high schools or college, but still not ideal.
The 2-1-2 is hardly used because it keeps a high post defender away from the basket. This defense is too spread-out for many teams to use it and it begins to look a lot like the 2-3.
3. The press refers to the full-court press. It can be man-to-man but this is when trap defense is great to have. Press coverage will have a player covering the person inbounding the ball and man defense against any player in the back-court looking to receive the ball. Any other defensive players will be guarding against long or full-court passes. If all players are in the back-court than the defense is likely to press in zone coverage with 3 players in the front-court and 2 players holding at half-court to guard any players that break long for a pass or to trap anyone dribbling along the out-of-bounds line.
4. The half-court offense is more guard-orientated but refers more to the offensive set of a team. If a team likes to break-out and run a lot of fastbreaks they are said to be more of a transition offensive team, where they look to use their speed to get quick and easy baskets. Half-court offenses work to pass the ball around in set plays, running screens and finding the best shot or the most open man.
I've been playing basketball for the past 17 years and have coached for the past 4 years. If I know any sport it's basketball.
NBA Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks Have Resources To Chase Chris Paul
It's a funny game, this basketball. One minute you've cashed in a huge trade chip for nominal upgrades and one of your biggest fans has holes all over his drywall, the next the best point guard in the NBA could become yours. The Dallas Mavericks entered this summer with pie-in-the-sky hopes of landing Dwyane Wade or LeBron James, and when that fell through they turned Erick Dampier's expiring ...
